Split a payment in Jovvie Point of Sale
Use Split payment when a customer wants to pay for one order in more than one way, for example part in cash and part by card. You choose each payment method and the amount for it. The payment amounts, minus any cash change, must add up to the order total.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- The Split Payment payment method is turned on. See Choose payment methods.
- Each method you want to use in the split is turned on.
- If the split includes a card payment, the reader or terminal is turned on and connected to the internet. See Take a Stripe card reader payment in Jovvie Point of Sale or Take an NMI terminal payment in Jovvie Point of Sale.
- If the split includes cash and your station uses cash management, open the till to start a cash session first. See Open the till.
- The cart has at least one item. See Find and add products.
What you can split
Section titled “What you can split”- Each payment method can be used once in a split.
- Invoice cannot be part of a split payment. Do not add it to a split. To send an invoice, see Send an invoice to pay later.
- Paying by QR code is not part of a split payment.
- Cards can be part of a split with a Stripe reader (Swipe/Insert/Tap marked with Stripe Terminal), with Enter Card (Stripe only), or with an NMI terminal (Swipe/Insert/Tap marked with NMI Terminal).
- Express checkout does not start a reader on its own for a split payment.
Split the payment
Section titled “Split the payment”-
In the cart, tap Checkout.
-
If a tip screen or a Points & Rewards screen opens, complete it first. See Accept a tip and Redeem Points and Rewards.
-
At the bottom of the payment screen, tap Split payment.
The screen changes to Split, and the top shows To split and the order total.
-
Tap Select Payment Method.
-
Tap the first payment method the customer will use.
-
In Amount Tendered, enter the amount the customer will pay with this method.
-
Tap Add another payment option.
-
Tap the next payment method.
-
In Amount Tendered, enter the amount for this method. To fill in whatever is left of the total, tap Add Rest.
-
Repeat steps 7 to 9 for any other methods.
-
For a card method, also select the reader or terminal, or type the card details for Enter Card.
-
Check that the payment amounts, minus any cash change shown next to Change:, add up to the order total. If the pay button shows the amount, it also shows Balance and the difference.
-
If the split includes cash, collect the cash from the customer. The register records the cash amount you entered and does not check that you received it.
-
If the split includes a method that only records a payment, such as Check Payments, make sure you have received that payment. See Record other payment types.
-
Tap the pay button. By default it shows Pay and the amount.
-
If the split includes a card reader or terminal, ask the customer to tap, insert, or swipe their card, and follow the prompts on its screen.
When every part of the payment goes through, the register shows the completed order. Tap New Order to start the next sale.
All parts of the split are processed when you tap the pay button. To keep things simple for the customer, use only one card reader or terminal in each split.
Cash in a split
Section titled “Cash in a split”If one of the methods is Cash, the cash amount can be more than what is left to pay. The register shows the change next to Change: at the top of the screen.
The change cannot be more than the cash amount. If it is, you see Oops! Cash change cannot exceed the cash payment. This happens when the amounts on the other methods add up to more than the order total. Reduce the amounts on the other methods so they do not go over the order total. Then enter the cash you actually received.
Change the methods before you pay
Section titled “Change the methods before you pay”- To remove a method from the split, tap the remove button (X) on its row. You can only remove a method when the split has more than one method.
- To leave the split and pay with a single method, tap Split at the top of the screen.
If part of the split fails
Section titled “If part of the split fails”If one part of the split fails, the register shows an error, such as a message starting with Oops! Payment method or Oops! Following payment methods have failed processing. Some parts may show Paid, and you cannot change or remove them.
A part that is not marked Paid may still have been charged. When one part fails, a card part that went through at the same time can be left without the Paid marker. If you tap the pay button again, the register tries every part that is not marked Paid, including that card.
- Read the error to see which method failed.
- For every card part of the split, check whether that card was charged:
- For a Stripe reader or Enter Card, check your Stripe Dashboard.
- For an NMI terminal, check the terminal screen. If the terminal is still waiting for a card, cancel the transaction on the terminal.
- Find the order in the register’s order history. See Find and view orders.
- If a card part was charged or is still processing but is not marked Paid, stop. Do not tap the pay button again. Contact Jovvie support.
- Fix the problem with the failed part, for example by choosing another reader or correcting the amount.
- Tap the pay button again only when you have confirmed that no part you are retrying was charged and none is still processing.
If you see The payment may have completed, but the order could not be updated. Check the order history and the payment status before charging again., some or all of the money may already have been taken. Follow the steps in If part of the split fails before you do anything else.
If you are not sure what was paid, contact Jovvie support before you take another payment.
Cancel a split after part of it was paid
Section titled “Cancel a split after part of it was paid”If you leave the split after one or more parts were paid, the register warns you with a message starting with Warning! Some split payments have already been processed. The money for those parts has already been taken.
The warning only counts parts marked Paid. A card part that was charged but not marked Paid does not trigger it, so check every card part as described in If part of the split fails before you leave the split.
The best option is usually to finish the split. First follow the checks in If part of the split fails. Only when you have confirmed that no part you are retrying was charged and none is still processing, fix the failed part and tap the pay button again, or use another payment method for that part.
If you must cancel:
- Confirm the cancellation in the warning.
- Return the money for every part that was paid:
- Cash: give the cash back to the customer.
- Stripe card: refund the payment in your Stripe Dashboard.
- NMI terminal: refund the transaction outside Point of Sale. If you are not sure how, contact Jovvie support.
- Other methods: return the money the way your business normally does.
The register does not refund the paid parts for you when you cancel.
Refunds
Section titled “Refunds”A refund in the register for a split payment only records the refund, even if part of the payment was by card. Return the money for each part yourself. See Refund an order in the register.
