Take an NMI terminal payment in Jovvie Point of Sale

If your store takes card payments through NMI, use the NMI payment method in the Jovvie Point of Sale register to charge a card on an NMI terminal (the card machine the customer pays on). When the payment goes through, the order is marked completed.

How NMI terminals differ from Stripe readers

Section titled “How NMI terminals differ from Stripe readers”
  • Abort only stops the register from waiting. It does not cancel the transaction on the terminal. You must cancel it on the terminal as well.
  • You pick the terminal at checkout. The list shows every terminal registered to your NMI account. Terminals are not turned on per station like Stripe readers.
  • Express checkout does not start NMI terminals automatically.
  • NMI terminals only work with currencies that have two decimal places.
  • Once the transaction has started, the register can wait up to about three minutes for the terminal result. Starting the transaction can take extra time before that.
  1. In the cart, tap Checkout.

  2. If a tip screen or a Points & Rewards screen opens, complete it first. See Accept a tip and Redeem Points and Rewards.

  3. Under Select Payment Method, tap Swipe/Insert/Tap marked with NMI Terminal.

  4. Select the terminal the customer will use. If you only have one terminal, it is already selected.

  5. Tap the pay button. By default it shows Pay and the amount.

The Payment Processing window opens. It shows status updates from the terminal while you wait.

  6. Ask the customer to tap, insert, or swipe their card on the terminal.

  7. Follow any prompts on the terminal screen.

When the payment goes through, the register shows the completed order. Tap New Order to start the next sale.

  1. Tap Abort in the Payment Processing window. The register stops waiting and shows Payment aborted.
  2. Cancel the transaction on the terminal.
  3. Check the terminal screen to confirm the transaction was cancelled and the customer was not charged.

If the terminal transaction is still open and you tap the pay button again for the same order, the register picks up that same payment and keeps waiting. It does not start a second charge.

If you are not sure the payment went through

Section titled “If you are not sure the payment went through”

These messages mean the result is unknown:

  • A message starting with Timed out waiting for the terminal payment result.
  • A message starting with Connection to the payment service was lost.
  • A message starting with A previous attempt to start a terminal payment did not finish and its outcome is unknown. A shorter version reads A previous attempt to start this terminal payment has an unknown result.
  • The payment may have completed, but the order could not be updated. Check the order history and the payment status before charging again.

To check the payment:

  1. Look at the terminal screen to see whether the payment went through.
  2. If the terminal is still waiting for a card, cancel the transaction on the terminal.
  3. Find the order in the register’s order history. See Find and view orders.
  4. If the customer was charged, do not charge again.
  5. Only if no payment went through and the terminal transaction is cancelled or failed, tap the pay button again.

If you are not sure, contact Jovvie support before you take another payment. For the fix for each message, see the NMI section of Card reader payment problems.

Refunds for NMI payments work differently from Stripe. See Refund an order in the register.
