Jovvie Checkout overview
Jovvie Checkout adds in-person card payments to any app or platform. Customers can tap, insert, or swipe their card on a card reader, or pay with Tap to Pay. This page explains how Checkout works, what each ready-made integration does, and where to start.
With a ready-made integration, your site creates the order, form entry, donation, or ticket order as usual. Jovvie then opens a payment page where you choose a Stripe card reader, and the customer taps, inserts, or swipes their card on the reader.
The ready-made integrations work with Stripe only. An integration you build yourself can use Stripe or NMI. For the differences, see Stripe and NMI: what’s different.
Supported integrations
Section titled “Supported integrations”Jovvie offers ready-made integrations for these plugins:
- WooCommerce: take in-person payments for orders placed through your WooCommerce checkout. The payment option is named Jovvie Payments by default.
- Gravity Forms: take one-time payments with your Gravity Forms forms. The form needs a Jovvie payment feed and a pricing field.
- GiveWP: take donations in person with your GiveWP donation forms. Donors see the payment option as Swipe, Insert or Tap Donations.
- Event Tickets: sell tickets at the door with Tickets Commerce, the checkout built into Event Tickets. The Events Calendar is optional.
Each integration is a separate Jovvie plugin or add-on that you install and connect to your Jovvie account. Your Jovvie account is linked to your Stripe account.
If your app or platform is not listed, a developer can build their own integration. See Build your own Jovvie Checkout integration.
How a payment works
Section titled “How a payment works”With the ready-made integrations, a payment goes like this:
- On your site, staff fill in the checkout, form, donation form, or ticket checkout and submit it.
- Your site creates the order, entry, or donation and sends the browser to the Jovvie payment page.
- On the payment page, staff select In-Person Payment and choose a reader.
- The customer pays on the reader.
- The payment page sends the browser back to your site.
- Your site marks the order, entry, or donation as paid. When this happens depends on the integration. See What each integration does.
For the payment page steps, see Take a payment on the Jovvie payment page.
Who can use your readers
Section titled “Who can use your readers”The payment page only lists your card readers on a device that is allowed to use them. At least one of these must be true:
- Staff are signed in to WordPress on the device.
- The browser was connected in the plugin settings. See Use Checkout on a shared or kiosk device.
- Staff know your Access PIN and enter it on the payment page.
What each integration does
Section titled “What each integration does”| WooCommerce | Gravity Forms | GiveWP | Event Tickets | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Where you take the payment | Your WooCommerce checkout page, with Jovvie Payments selected and Place order | Your form, after you submit it | Your donation form, with Swipe, Insert or Tap Donations selected | The Tickets Commerce checkout page, with Purchase Tickets |
| How the payment is recorded | The order starts as Pending payment. Your site moves it to Processing only when it receives the payment confirmation from Stripe. Returning to your site does not complete the order by itself | The entry starts as Processing. When the browser comes back to your site, the add-on checks the payment with Jovvie and marks the entry Paid. If the browser does not return, an hourly check updates the entry | When the payment page sends the browser back to your site, GiveWP checks the payment with Jovvie and marks the donation Complete. If the browser does not return, the donation can stay Pending after a successful charge | Your site marks the order completed when it receives the payment confirmation from Stripe. Returning to your site does not complete the order by itself |
| If you click ← Back before paying | You go to the order received page, and the order stays Pending payment | You return to a blank form. The entry stays Processing until the hourly check marks it Failed | You return to the donation form, and GiveWP marks the donation Abandoned | You return to the ticket checkout page |
